Counting on Grace by Elizabeth Winthrop5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() It seems the work of Lewis Hine has come too late for some. He sees opportunity in education and he is willing to do anything to get it, even if it means purposely mangling his hand in a machine. Arthur, however, cannot bear the conditions in the mill. When a teacher encourages the children to write a letter of complaint to the National Labor Committee, Grace understands that outcomes of such an action could put her family in terrible jeopardy. Grace is glad to have the chance to earn some extra pennies for her family, who depend on this contribution for their very survival. ![]() Grace and her best friend Arthur are forced to leave school to work in a mill, replacing full bobbins with empty ones. If you are into American history at all, you know the photograph: a weary young girl standing in front of rows of bobbins, a smock askew, hair pulled up, leaning on one elbow, a child pausing from her twelve hour workday. ![]() Books similar to the fill in boyfriend5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Just when Gia begins to wonder if she could turn her fake boyfriend into a real one, Bradley comes waltzing back into her life, exposing her lie, and threatening to destroy her friendships and her new-found relationship. Also by this author: The Distance Between Us, Lucky in Love ![]() ![]() ![]() Most of all, though, the title is literal: Wright was seriously undernourished much of his life, even into adulthood. Wright wanted to call the book American Hunger, a resonant title that suggests not just the hunger that African Americans have felt to belong to their country but also the hunger with which America has devoured them. Amazing that Wright survived not just that errant moment but his childhood at all. In the first pages of his autobiography, Wright, a bored four-year-old, almost burns his grandmother’s house down, and the rest of the book is seldom less incendiary. ![]() Richard Wright, Black Boy (American Hunger) (1945/1991) ![]() Article 5 trilogy5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Imperial Shadow CouncilĬhapter 23 opens with a major nod to a fan-favorite Star Wars villain. ![]() Here’s what we learned in the penultimate chapter of Season 3. Oh, kings, thought Kell as he fastened the buttons on the coat. Just because he adopted a more modest palette when he was abroad (wishing neither to offend the local royalty nor to draw attention) didn’t mean he had to sacrifice style. Well, a simple black jacket elegantly lined with silver thread and adorned with two gleaming columns of silver buttons. So when Kell passed through the palace wall and into the anteroom, he took a moment to steady himself-it took its toll, moving between worlds-and then shrugged out of his red, high-collared coat and turned it inside out from right to left so that it became a simple black jacket. There were ones that blended in and ones that stood out, and one that served no purpose but of which he was just particularly fond. Not all of them were fashionable, but they each served a purpose. The first thing he did whenever he stepped out of one London and into another was take off the coat and turn it inside out once or twice (or even three times) until he found the side he needed. It had neither one side, which would be conventional, nor two, which would be unexpected, but several, which was, of course, impossible. ![]() The chronicles of prydain age level5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Thankfully our teachers were great guides on what titles to introduce and what level we should aim for. ![]() How To Expand Their SelectionĪs we navigate this new phase with our children, there is much to learn and little time to do so. My son has really enjoyed the continuation of characters and how they move from one adventure to the next, which in turn makes it easier to keep reading new books in the series. One thing we have found with chapter book series, is that they tend to progress on difficulty with vocabulary, length, depth in characters, and plot. But as time went by and he continued to practice with picture books, his reading level finally evolved into chapter books and since then he has been unstoppable. Getting super excited and finding all kinds of chapter books, only to find out that he was not interested. When my eldest started to read, we went through all the phases. It is very easy to get carried away and jump into books that can overwhelm children which, in turn, demotivate. The process is beautiful but can also be overwhelming as parents try to figure out what their kids like, their comfort with reading, and understanding reading levels. The transition from picture to chapter books is one of the most excited ones. The first years of elementary school are full of learning moments and changes. ![]() Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() New and returning readers alike will be enthralled.
